DU mourning day being observed

Today is 15th October—the Dhaka University Mourning Day. The day is being observed with due respect and commemoration of the tragic deaths of students and employees in a building collapse at Jagannath Hall.

Dhaka University Vice-chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique, on behalf of the university authorities, paid his deep homage placing a wreath to the tomb at Jagannath Hall in the morning.

Pro-vice Chancellor Harun-or-Rashid, President of DU Teacher’s Association Professor Khandaker Bazlul Haque, provost of different halls accompanied him.

He also inaugurated a structure at the place of the collapsed building to preserve the memory of the tragedy.

Special prayers have also been arranged in different mosques and shrines of the university while black flags hoisted in the registrar building and all halls.

Some 39 students and employees of DU were killed when a roof of a one-storeyed building of Jagannath Hall collapsed on October 15, 1985.

VC Dr Arefin Siddique, in a reminiscence meeting on the spot, said, “In observance of the day, we all have to remain alert so that no such incident occurs again at any place of the country. We have to take pledge to be honest and sincere as inefficiency and dishonesty caused the accident”.

DU Senate member Subhash Sinha Roy urged the authorities concerned to renovate all the risky buildings of DU as well as of all the institutions across the country.

Sources said, some building of Jagannath Hall, Shahidullah Hall, Muhsin Hall are still in risky condition.
